Collard Anacari
Collard Anacari - An attractive small toucan of tropical lowland forest and edge. Usually found in small groups moving through the canopy of fruiting trees or seen flying, one at a time, across clearings and between trees. Flight rather direct and fast, when long-tailed and long-billed shape is distinctive. Note the yellow body with red and black markings, and the serrated pattern on the big bill.
BELIZE HABITAT - Mid-levels to sub-canopy in broadleaf forest and forest edge. Where can I find this bird in Belize? Fairly common to common resident on mainland; formerly on Ambergris Caye. |
Keel-Billed Toucan
Keel Billed Toucan - Large unmistakable toucan with a huge, rainbow-colored bill. Often seen in pairs, but not usually in groups like aracaris. Flies with a few flaps followed by a swooping glide, sometimes high over the forest canopy, and looks like a ‘flying banana.’ Heard more often than seen: ‘song’ is a far-carrying, frog-like croak, repeated steadily. Despite its large size and bright colors, can be difficult to see in leafy canopy, where it moves deliberately in search of food.
BELIZE HABITAT - Sub-canopy to canopy in broadleaf forest and forest edge. Where can I find this bird in Belize? Fairly common to common resident on mainland. |
Emerald Toucanet
Emerald Toucanet - Medium-sized, grass-green toucan of humid tropical forest in foothills and highlands; also very locally in lowlands. Usually in pairs or small groups, moving through the canopy or feeding at fruiting trees. Nothing similar in its range. Note the rusty tail tips, best seen from below. Pattern of black and yellow on bill varies from region to region.
BELIZE HABITAT - Mid-strata to sub-canopy, submontane and foothill broadleaf forest interior and edge; less often in sub-montane pine forest. Where can I find this bird in Belize? Common resident in Maya Mountains, less common in Vaca Plateau Cayo and mountains. Pine Ridge; seasonal breeding visitor in west Orange Walk. Disperses occasionally at end of rainy season to lower elevations in south east Orange Walk and in west Belize and interior Stann Creek and Toledo. Un-recorded from Corozal. |
