Marco Gonzales Site
Description: The Marcos Gonzales site, is situated on the island's south end, near Laguna de Boca Chica. These ruins, are currently still covered with dense jungle vegetation. They are estimated to be approximately 2,000 years old. It is believed that at its peak the ancient Maya civilization on Ambergris caye was about 20,000, Marco Gonzalez is one of 18 small Maya sites identified in the area. The site has seen significant re-construction, and it's definitely worth a visit, if you do not wish to travel to the mainland to see the more spectacular Mayan Ruins.
